FC Barcelona and Ajax have reached an agreement for the transfer of Frenkie de Jong, who will be joining the club from 1 July 2019. Barca will pay initial €75m, as the fee can go up to €86m due to different clauses.
De Jong has signed 5 year contract and will remain in Ajax until the end of this season. He chose Barcelona as his boyhood favorite club, while PSG and Manchester City were also interested for his services. Frenkie has developed into one of the hottest talents in European football and helped Ajax reach the last 16 in the Champions League.
“With the arrival of Frenkie de Jong we add talent, youth and Barca style to our sporting project,” wrote club president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Twitter.
“We are convinced that he will be a key part of our team for years to come. Welcome, Frenkie!”
Barcelona and Ajax have had great relationship in the past 30 years, ever since Johan Cruyff, a great legend of both clubs took over the Catalan club in 1988. Barca has also strong history with Dutch players, with the likes of Ronald Koeman, Michael Reiziger, Philippe Cocu, Patrick Kluivert, Frank & Ronald de Boer, Marc Overmars, Giovanni van Bronckhorst spending many years on Camp Nou.
