Naomi Osaka won her second Grand Slam title after defeating Petra Kvitova 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-4 and became new world number one in women’s tennis.
Osaka played fantastic tournament, as she got to the final without losing any set. The 21-year old Japanese tennis player secured her first Australian Open and once again proved that bright tennis future is ahead of her.
She won the first set on tie-break (7-2 in the tie-break), but started the second set a bit slower letting Kvitova an early break. Osaka managed to make a rebreak in the next game and turned the set around in her favor. She had consecutive 3 match points on 5-3 in the second set on Petra’s serve, but the Czech tennis player saved them and won the next four games, winning the set 7-5.
Osaka broke Kvitova in the third game of the deciding set, which was enough for her to win the set 6-4 and win the first Australian Open title in her career.
Petra Kvitova played her first Grand Slam final after the knife attack in 2016 that threatened to end her career. She showed that she is a real fighter, but today was outplayed by a better opponent. Kvitova has 2 Grand Slams in her career, both on Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.
