Real won the Madrid derby 3-1 with an amazing performance on Wanda Metropolitano against Atletico.
Casemiro got Real Madrid going with a goal 16 minutes before Antoine Griezmann responded nine minutes later, but a penalty-kick goal by Sergio Ramos just before halftime and a strike from substitute Gareth Bale 74 minutes in put the game away for Santiago Solari’s team
Real Madrid was the sharper team in this match. Perhaps the draw that they played out with Barcelona motivated them to stay disciplined against their city rival Atletico. Real’s players didn’t waver even after Atletico’s quick response
Before Bale got the third Alvaro Morata thought he had equalised but VAR intervened in favour of the visitors. Morata had raced away and lobbed Thibaut Courtois but the flag was raised and VAR confirmed the referee’s assistant had made the right call.
“I don’t normally comment on VAR. It is something that will get better. I don’t have the replays that they have. I hope they got the decisions right,” Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said.
Real are now five points behind leaders Barcelona who play Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.“The league is not decided yet,” Real captain Sergio Ramos insisted. Later on Saturday Espanyol host Rayo Vallecano and Huesca travel to Girona. Earlier Getafe beat Celta Vigo 3-1.
